Since its inception in 1994, DirecTV has reached over 14 million customers. This high volume of subscribers is driving prices down and providing motivation fro Direct TV to consistently improve the value of its programming packages and maintaining cutting edge technology. DirecTV's Total Choice Premier Package provides diverse programming across the television spectrum including broadcasting local television, major networks and movie channels such as Starz, HBO, Showtime and Cinemax.
DirecTV also provides educational programming through the Discovery Channel, History and History International, The Learning Channel and others. The package also includes sports favorites such as Altitude Sports & Entertainment as well as several versions of ESPN. DirecTV's news channel options are also varied including CNN, Headline News and Fox News. Children's programming is also provided with channels such as Discovery Kids, Nicktoons, Disney and Animal Planet. DirecTV also offers options of Parental Controls which are provided as part of the standard package. The Parental Controls can be used to limit what programming children are exposed to based on MPAA ratings, viewing times, channel and specific programming. The parental controls are password protected and allow the adult members full access to the programming while keeping the controls in effect for the children's viewing.
DirecTV also offers a range of over 40XM satellite radio channels offering commercial free music with high quality CD sound.
DirecTV also provides advanced technology in Digital Video Recording. This upgrade makes the VCR obsolete. DVR can record two shows at once or allow the viewer to watch one show and and record a different one. The DVR includes up to 100 hours of storage capacity on the hard drive, where it stores this recorded programming for viewing at the customer's convenience. The Digital Video Recorder software is fully integrated into the on screen program guide and is user friendly. Additionally, with the DVR technology, the user can pause, rewind and replay live television.
DirecTV also provides High Definition Television programming. An HDTV receiver is specifically designed to decompress the specifically designed HDTV programming that is part of DirecTV's HDTV package. HDTV provides higher resolution picture, higher quality sound and intensified colors which make viewing HDTV closer to a movie theater experience. Additional programming can be added to any package including HDTV channels, adult entertainment and foreign language programming. The DIRECTV HD Home Theater provides Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound, utilized by the user's 5 speaker setup system. The high definition picture is viewed as a
theater wide 16:9 aspect ratio for added image and depth without letterbox black bars. The higher resolution image has 1.080 lines of detail while the standard definition image has 480 lines of detail, this difference makes the images clearer and enhanced. HDTV has
10 times the pixels of standard TV enhancing the picture with more vibrant colors and wider images. DirecTV offers an HDTV DVR which provides up to 50 hours of recording time for the high definition programming. HDTV programming offers popular channels such as ESPN HD, HBO HD, Pay Per View in HD and DirecTV has plans for the future to offer 150 HD channels.
